Buy or build
Posted by jonathan - 19/05/07 at 12:05:57 pmI keep running into situations where people say “we can just build it like ____ google product”. replace _____ with spreadsheets, docs, maps etc. rhe issue is, given the web 2.0 hype, coupled with google’s marketing and non-technologist think you can build an enterprise app in months. what they fail to realize is that political groups the company might require security standards, monitoring protocol and standardization across products.
So lets take a look at some google apps:
Spreadsheets - acquired from x2 technology, it has been in development since 2000
Docs - aqcuired from Writely
Picasa - acquired from Picasa
Blogger - acquired from Pyra
Google Analytics - acquired from Urchin
Google Earth - Acquired from keystone
Lets see how well they start to integrate their products
