nice manhattan, sweet bar

pops used to drink manhattans and I have picked up the vice as well. the sweet tooth must be hereditary. threw a couple back with a nice condiment, black cherries, at Death & Co on saturday.

moving to open source UI testing

for some reason I really want to stop our company from using mercury qtp. why spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on licensing limited product. granted some of my grippes are do to our inability to handle admin such as sso, but there are plenty of cool open source tools coming to the market. look for my post series on selenium nunit and cc.net.

Buy or build

I keep running into situations where people say “we can just build it like ____ google product”. replace _____ with spreadsheets, docs, maps etc. rhe issue is, given the web 2.0 hype, coupled with google’s marketing and non-technologist think you can build an enterprise app in months. what they fail to realize is that political groups the company might require security standards, monitoring protocol and standardization across products.

So lets take a look at some google apps:

Spreadsheets - acquired from x2 technology, it has been in development since 2000

Docs - aqcuired from Writely

Picasa - acquired from Picasa

Blogger - acquired from Pyra

Google Analytics - acquired from Urchin

Google Earth - Acquired from keystone

Lets see how well they start to integrate their products
